Congratulations! You’ve got your temple recommend in hand and are preparing to receive your endowments in the temple. We know that the first time can be a little nerve-wracking but don’t worry, we’ve got some pointers to make your experience easier .
Here are the 5 things you need to know before going to the temple for the first time:
1. Be Calm and at Peace
You’re about to enter a place that is literally a “Heaven on Earth”. Be assured that everyone there is willing to help you and is excited that you are receiving your endowment. Yes, today IS a big day but there really isn’t a way you can mess it up. So ease those jitters and enjoy the beauty of the experience!
2. Prepare For The Temple (“…and Ye Shall Not Fear”)
You’ve already prepared spiritually to get this far in the journey and now it’s best to make sure that you have the material preparations. Get everything packed and squared away in a ‘temple bag’ the night before. This includes your recommend, your temple dress and garments needed, your temple documents given to you by your church leaders and anything else you’ll need that you won’t want to forget.
3. Temple Clothing – Will You Rent Or Own?
Depending on your situation, you’ll want to think about this one. While the temple dresses and other necessary clothing are available for rent each time, it’s a good idea to find a dress that you will feel comfortable in and that you can call your own. The temple dresses for rent are more of a ‘one size fits all’ deal and renting temple clothes can add up after a while.
4. No One’s Perfect
You will have many people there to assist you through the temple for your first trip since everything will be new and exciting to you. Don’t fret about what to do or what comes next – you’ll have guidance at all times. You don’t need to know everything and you don’t need to understand everything, either. Just enjoy the beauty of the temple and the peace you will feel that comes from the support of friends and family who will be there with you.
5. Overwhelmed? Don’t Be
The first time going through the temple can be overwhelming for some because we are taught sacred principles in a symbolic form that we don’t always understand entirely. Don’t worry, there’s nothing that you are expected to know this day except for the covenants that you will be making to your Heavenly Father. Attending the temple often is the best way to understand more about the endowment ceremony itself and the symbolism of the temple. It’s always best to remember that the temple is a “house of learning”.
We hope you have an amazing temple experience and that it is a memorable day for you. Do you have a favorite temple? Take this poll and let us know: Favorite Temple Quiz!
